This play requires the kind of set that tends to make audiences applaud, especially when seeing it for the first time when the curtain rises. I saw the most recent revival (starring Kevin Kline) twice and the set there got applause both times. It's the fantasy urban apartment of everyone's dreams. And the effect of a curtain rising on it makes all the difference nowadays when it's more common to do without the curtain and simply have the set in view from the moment the audience arrives at the theatre.

Langella is marvel and I've enjoyed his work in everything I've seen him in over the years, starting with that PRESENT LAUGHTER.
