I was on board with De Niro from the first scene. His character is a jerk. Not the first time in a movie. There's a long list of male protagonists being assholes.
I've never really understood this aversion to his performance. Technically, it is a marvel on many levels. He also has never looked sexier in a movie. And his chemistry with Liza is not to be denied.
I have always loved this movie and was so thrilled when it was re-released (to considerable acclaim) in 1981, with the fantastic "Happy Endings" restored in all its glory. It was the first sequence Scorsese shot, and that speaks volumes to me.
I don't think Liza regrets making this film. Or De Niro, for that matter. |
