I wonder if this pandemic might be the end of cinemas as we knew them before. This is a whole industry that could possibly go the way of video rental stores, with some niche locations in areas that will support them, but largely gone from the landscape.
The experience of watching a film on a large screen with superior sound quality is now mostly replicatable in people's homes. Televisions get bigger and better and cheaper all the time. And you don't have to pay close to $20 a ticket or deal with pricey concessions or talking patrons or other people's cell phones.
Of course, it's not the same as seeing a film on such an enormous screen or sharing the experience with an audience, but people might be willing to forgo those aspects in exchange for safety and, once people get used to the experience of seeing the latest releases in their living rooms, it may be difficult to convince them that cinemas offer something worth the extraordinary prices they charge. |
