In 1938, Maurice Evans starred in the first uncut HAMLET in America. It started at 6:30 and ended at 11:15 (Burns Mantle noted on opening night, the curtain fell at 11:30). There was a half hour dinner break, from 8:15 to 8:35. The Astor and Lincoln Hotels, as well as Sardi’s had $1.00 buffet dinners available for hungry theatre-goers. There was another ten minute intermission at 9:50.
In that damn novel of mine, I have my time traveler see this show, which is why I know these useless facts.
