Tourism in New York City will need at least four years to recover from the free-fall triggered by the pandemic, according to a new forecast from the city’s tourism promotion agency, a somber assessment that reflects the major obstacles to the city’s economic recovery. The return of international visitors, who stay longer and spend much more than domestic visitors, will be even slower, the agency forecasts. The number of foreign tourists in the city is not likely to return to its 2019 level before 2025, the forecast shows. “It’s going to be a very slow build initially,” said Fred Dixon, the chief executive of the agency, NYC & Company... “Many look at Broadway as the dinner bell,” Mr. Dixon said. “As soon as that dinner bell rings, people are going to come far and wide.”

Just when theaters will be opening up depending on when in 2022. There might have been some delay when construction was stopped earlier this year. But in San Fran construction is happening and I assume ny also. The nederlanders lucked out in having this happen now when everything is shut down.

| I was thinking about this too...the thing is that this never struck me as a very sound idea. There was plenty of vacant retail space around Times Square even before COVID-19. Between this project and the mall going in under the Marriott Marquis, I have a feeling that there's going to be a lot of overpriced empty storefronts in Times Square, unless the idea here is to make the rents affordable for businesses that aren't national chains. | |

How does one become President and CEO of NYC & Co.? Fred Dixon seems like a Charlotte St. Martin of nyc tourism (who coincidentally sits on the board of NYC & Co.). I'm not dismissing Mr. Parrott of The New School's claims that many of the people who have lost their jobs due to the collapse of tourism were "workers of color". But the inclusion of that fact next to the article's theme that the city somehow needs to set a goal of returning to the engorged tourism rates of 2019 is rather crude... as if a critical mass of low paid and mid-range salaried workers of color in the hospitality industry justifies a return to an old status quo that was grinding its gears even before covid.

I am confused by a few things you say. Maybe you can help me out. 1. I am not sure why you are picking on Fred Dixon. He got his job by gaining a lot of experience in travel marketing. The comparison to Charlotte St. Martin seems unfair; she is in way over her head. Are you suggesting that he is? And on the basis of what? 2. I am not sure why you are picking on the inclusion of info about the effect of the pandemic on less-educated workers (disproportionately POC). It's a fact and unless you have a different path to propose, we have to hope that tourism continues to drive the economy. What do you propose to do with that workforce over the next 5 years? 3. What was the "grinding of gears"? In other words, what are you actually proposing? Yes it would be lovely to have a city disgorged of so much tourism (same in every major city in the world, incidentally), but how do you make that happen? You seem to have a complaint without a shred of a solution, but I'm listening. you aren't proposing to ignore taking care of our underclass, are you? As I say, I am just perplexed by what you say, not because I am in love with the ill effects of all the tourism on our quality of life, but because I don't think pretending we have another way out over the near and medium term is responsible.
