|Sorry, but while it’s been fun to get a recent show every now and then (Grand Hotel, Big River, and obviously Chicago which just predated me the first time around), Into the Woods is one of those musicals I’ve seen live on stage in no fewer than 5 professional productions – counting the 3 main ones in New York, but not counting the countless times I’ve seen the original and London productions on video, or the major studio feature film from a few years ago.
If this is the new primary mission of Encores - remounting shows that have been done in my own lifetime, from the last 30 years or so (Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Life, Into the Woods and so on), under the umbrella of calling them “iconic”, I think it’s time to pass on my subscription to allow someone else from a younger generation to nab it. (Although it’s hard to imagine people younger than me paying anything close to full prices at Encores to see a show like Woods that they can stream at home in 1 or 3 different versions, but maybe I’m wrong).
I guess I’ll reluctantly turn down my renewal, and wait to buy the occasional ticket - such as for “Love Life”, if they ever do it. (Possibly “The Tap Dance Kid”, which I sort of like and which I doubt I might well never get to see again otherwise... which I THOUGHT was the whole point of Encores in the first place. Shrug.)
