The tabloids say Hugh Sheridan checked himself into a mental health clinic following the Hedwig controversy...

"The House Husbands star was left 'heartbroken' after he was inundated with messages from trolls on social media over his casting in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a close friend of the actor told Daily Mail Australia on Friday.

"The source revealed that Hugh now hopes to raise awareness about the effects of online bullying - and encourage others to seek mental health treatment when they need it.

"The friend said: 'All this did was break his heart. There comes a point where enough is enough and you need to ask for help. There is only so much you can take before you ask for help, so he asked for help'."

this anonymously-sourced story is too sketchy to be repeated here or anywhere imo

The gay newspaper in Perth is reporting it, too.

I'm sure you appreciate that all they did was piggyback on the earlier article.

And at least they included that arresting image of Mr. Sheridan's torso.

The tell here is the article's source, the UK's right-wing Daily Mail. That's not to say that Mr. Sheridan's claims of bullying aren't legitimate. But the context of this trans issue flare up in Australia which is unspoken here is Prime Minister Scott Morrison's use of trans issues as political football. Morrison has tried to deny bathroom space to trans people and has said that trans teens are pressured by "identity politics" to transition. It's actually a perfect storm to question whether HEDWIG is an appropriate musical to stage in Australia in this moment seeing as the story is about a young gay man pressured to transition. Again, perhaps not the fault of the musical's creators or Mr. Sheridan but theater doesn't operate in a vacuum as much as one often wishes it did.
