RUFUS WAINWRIGHT DEAR WORLD?
Posted by: StaunchKarakter (afbeck@gmail.com) 04:29 pm EST 11/23/20

Some time ago someone here posted the link to the Rufus Wainwright home concert where he performed the title number from "Dear World." It was so beautiful and timely. Listening to the strident OBC version isn't quite giving me the same chills.

That original link is now expired. Does anyone know where I can find audio or video of Rufus' version? I'm longing to hear it again.

I find Rufus to be an acquired taste that I've never quite acquired.

Although his voice has gotten much better over the years, personally, I think his songwriting has gone in the opposite direction, with rare exceptions here and there. I don't think he'll ever equal his first two albums, his self-titled debut and his sophomore album Poses. Those two albums of chamber pop have some exceptional songcraft, wonderful arrangements by the likes of Jon Brion and his tin pan alley / theatrical influences are very present.

I frankly don't like his voice. It's too nasal for me.

True, but like good scotch he gets better as he ages.

I have developed an appreciation of his take on "If Love Were All"* on the Garland Carnegie recreation. It has a unique blend of world-weariness and youthful reflection on a (love) life only half over that comes off as unaffected and charming.

*But the Ebersole version on her Coward album is truly sublime. I love the verses.

His Unfollow the Rules album is his best! And the aged scotch analogy is perfect, music-wise AND looks-wise!
