| I know enough about about British police procedures to say this is ridiculous. There is no way that anyone is thrown into a cell without having it outlined to them what they have been arrested for. That is the point of going to the custody desk when he arrived. The character would have been informed of his rights like legal assistance and to let someone know that he was there as well as access to medical help if he was injured or unwell. If any of this did not happen the police would have a legal case to answer. I watched about 40 minutes and just found it overwrought. | |

| Serious question: does it make a difference to you that the writers said before the show started that they wanted to write a play from the perspective of a Black Englishman? Bill, in San Diego |

| They wanted an “unfiltered” account but should that be allowed to be untruthful of how people are really treated?Remember everything that happens inside the police station is video taped too from the moment you leave the van to the moment you are in a cell. I have been through this myself. I am an Englishman who has been arrested twice for things outside of my control like being randomly attacked in the street and fighting back. I was never charged. I found the character as depicted to be a hysterical cry baby to be honest, at the station screaming and crying and punching the mattress. Get a grip man! And no Londoner would ever mistake an overground station for an underground. It just all felt false to me. | |

| Are you suggesting your experiences are representative of the BAME experience with law enforcement? Michael Balogun, who stars in the play, has had his own prison experiences. Presumably, it rang true enough for him. |

| My experiences are the same at the police station as any human being because the police HAVE to follow set guidelines there. Every moment of processing is video taped with sound too. If you are not told why you have been arrested, read your rights, allowed legal advice, a phone call to anyone you wish and medical assistance you can use the video tape to prove this and sue the police. It’s just how it is. | |

Not getting in to the veracity or quality of the piece but that is important information that I wasn't aware of. A video record of police arrests seems an important safeguard that could prevent mass meltdowns over police abuse and the exact thing that Macron is trying to foolishly get rid of in France at the moment. The flip side is that the sharing of a video of abuse can also trigger an uprising but transparency is the healthier long term option. |

| My experiences are the same at the police station as any human being because the police HAVE to follow set guidelines there. Painfully naive, I fear. This is not the forum, but as the statistics on deaths in custody show, there is ample evidence that problems linked to structural racism and inequality in the justice system persist, regardless of your personal experience. (Edit: Obviously, this response was intended for the previously threaded post.) |

| Again I have to stress everything is video taped for evidence, once at the police station no one can get away with anything inappropriate any more. People saying otherwise are like Trump moaning about voter fraud because that’s what suits their narrative. | |

| Yes, outstanding. The companion discussion was interesting as well. The actor was actually cast as the understudy and had two weeks to work on the performance after the lead fell ill (apparently, the lead has recovered). The performance was all the more impressive given how difficult the play would be to learn and to coordinate with the tech elements. By the way, the show continues to stream on the NT at Home YouTube site until Saturday, 2pm Eastern, I think. It was a 24-hour availability. Bill, in San Diego |
