Mickey Rowe has gotten press attention for being the first autistic actor to play the autistic character of Christopher Boone in the Tony-winning ''The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time'' at Indiana Repertory Theatre and Syracuse Stage. Rowe weighs in on a casting controversy over a new film, ''Music,'' starring Sia. In it, an autistic woman is played by the non-disabled Maddie Ziegler. When several professional autistic actresses tweeted to Sia about not hearing anything about the auditions for the role, Sia wrote back to one of them: ''Well, maybe you're a bad actor.''
Rowe advocates for more opportunities for autistic performers and says: ''I am a better actor because of ― not in spite of ― my autism.'' |
