The character Grace Kelly plays is called Connie Lane - that is the leading lady of "Good News". If I remember correctly, the leads are a football player and a student librarian. So it makes sense. The number in the original show is called "The French Lesson". Odd that they chose to put these two actors in this selection - usually Ed Sullivan showed excerpts of current Broadway hits.

Observation: Ralph Meeker speaking or singing has a very distinctive voice. He also has a natural masculinity, unselfconscious sexiness and macho charm that has nothing to do with muscles or looks. Grace is very charming and much more unaffected than she was as Tracy Lord in "High Society".

Ralph Meeker was originally announced to be the leading man in THE PAJAMA GAME before John Raitt took the role.

Thank you so much! I’ve never seen Good News.

They’re delightful, and I love that they seem to end the number in a French kiss.

I agree, Kelly and Meeker are trop charmants in that number.

Just to clarify, the song "The French Lesson" is not in the original stage production of Good News (though it probably is now, in revivals.) It was written by Betty Comden, Adolph Green, and Roger Edens and added to the MGM film version of the show in 1947, where it was sung by June Allyson and Peter Lawford.
