A Chorus LIne--the gay monologue
Posted by: dramedy 02:50 pm EST 11/29/20

I'm listening to the revival cast cd and wish the gay monologue was captured. I know its not music, but i was wondering if there was any discussion about making it into a song? I know "I Am What I Am" from La Cage was initially a monologue by HarveyF, but JerryH made into the first act finale. In a chorus line, i don't think there are any other monologues that weren't turned into a song. It has a lot of impact in the theater, each time i've seen the show live one can hear a pin drop about half way through it--it captures the audience that well.

Especially for the OBC, but even more for the revival when they could decide to change it up.

Assassins did it. The OBC has the entire Booth/Oswald scene but no Byck monologues. The revival album has the 2nd Byck monologue and a truncated Booth/Oswald scene (unless I am remembering wrong). No reason the ACL revival couldn't have had 1 track that was a monologue.

Well, the OBC would have been recorded for vinyl and (maybe?) cassettes. They couldn't even get all the music on the original album. I'm not at all surprised that they didn't want to take the time to record the monologue? Which five minutes of music would you delete from the album to include it?

The ASSASSINS comparison doesn't really work because the entire finale of the show hinges on that scene and the entire album would not have the impact that it does without it. Aside from the fact that ASSASSINS came along in the age of the CD, losing the monologue from A CHORUS LINE doesn't really impact one's experience of the album. You still get it. You just don't get much of Paul's story, just as you don't get much of the stories of many of the other characters.

I was only partly referring to the original album... i also said the revival, which was fully in the time of CD and digital, and could have fit it on if they chose to. Maybe it was about the cost of the time to record it. But honestly if they'd give him 3 takes it would have taken 1/2 an hour, and they just take the best one (as if it were a live performance he was doing 8 times a week) if they don't wanna pay for the time to edit them together.

I mean i'm okay, i've seen the show 10 times, i know what the monologue is. But it would be nice to have it recorded, and i know if I were playing Paul and my big story in a musical was done in a monologue and not a song like most of the other characters, I'd sure have loved to have it recorded for the world at large to have access to. That kind of thing can be pretty world-changing to your legacy as a performer and ability to build fans etc. I know they don't make decisions about what to record based on that, and as a record of the *SCORE* of the show, the album(s) are not missing anything by leaving that out, and the story of the show doesn't at all depend on having it there on the album. But still. Would have been nice, even if just on the far less noteworthy revival album.

The highlight of ''Every Little Step,'' the 2008 documentary about ''A Chorus Line,'' is Jason Tam's moving audition for Paul.

Since then, he's chalked up about a half-dozen Broadway credits. Jason's so talented and I can't wait for him to score his big breakout.

I personally didn't find his performance all that moving. He didn't cone across as authentic to me (i.e., it was very obvious that he was acting).

Fortunately, for Jason, he moved his auditioners to tears and landed the role in the ''Chorus Line'' revival. Good for him!

Yeah Jason is very talented, not to mention very handsome. I am surprised he hasn't had a break out role in a Netflix show or something like that to put him on the radar of a broader audience.

I think part of the reason is exactly because it IS a monologue (with no underscoring). It stands out because it's different from much of the show, which is either sung or underscored - but this is neither. (Same with the Cassie/Zach scene).

there's no music to the 2nd Byck monologue in Assassins but there it is on the revival album.

But not on the original recording. Though that one included the complete depository scene, much of which is not underscored.

But I'm not sure I understand your point. :-)

oh i was just saying that not having music under a scene or speech hasn't prevented a scene or speech from being included on a cast album of other shows (specifically Assassins... can't think of other examples off the top of my head. Are there any?).

The cast album of Ben Franklin in Paris ends with a lengthy speech -- it runs about 4:30 -- rather than a musical number. The first minute of it plays without underscoring. It turns into a musical number at about the 3:30 point.

Oh thanks, I didn't know that. That's one of those shows I've always meant to get around to the OBCR of but just haven't.

Lyrics for “At the Ballet” and “Nothing” were lifted from actual discussion.
