In reply to: Netflix should re-film great musicals made into terrible movies - Zelgo 09:05 am EST 12/01/20

I happen to think there's a great deal to admire in the Fosse film, but I would not mind a filmed stage version. Applegate certainly had her detractors, but I thought she was sensational and she has an existing relationship headlining a Netflix project. Another Netflix personality, Jane Krakowski, participated in some of the workshops that led to the revival. Realistically speaking, neither may be a big enough name to headline a project like this, but I'd love to see either of them do it.

And as long as I'm putting degree of celebrity aside, Sutton Foster is worth mentioning. I hated almost everything about the New Group's production, but I mostly blame Leigh Silverman. I'd like to see Sutton have another crack at the role.

I also loved Denis O'Hare as Oscar, but, if we're thinking celebrities, I could think of a number of "names" who'd be great, including occasional Applegate collaborator Will Ferrell, Jim Parsons, Matthew Broderick, and Jason Alexander.

And because this is my fantasy, even though she's no longer the ideal age for it and her hip replacements would probably prevent her from actually being able to dance it, I want Bebe as Nickie!

You don't mention "she's no longer the ideal age" until your last paragraph about Bebe Neuwirth? Everybody you named hasn't been the ideal age in decades! Is this casting for a possible Netflix movie, or a production by a senior living community?
You're talking about a FILMED version...so it might matter that the actors are all in their 50s! (60s in Bebe Neuwirth's and Jason Alexander's case). The Christina Applegate revival was 15 years ago, so those workshops with Jane Krakowski were probably close to 20 years ago. Believe it or not, adult actors "age out" of roles too! On stage as well.

...I was being facetious with my suggestion of Bebe. Her Nickie was so great, I wish it had been preserved on film, but, of course, she has now aged out of the role--even if we are willing to imagine Nickie as having been around the block quite a few times.

Your point about the ages of the other actors is well made. In the specific case of Applegate, she just turned 49; Verdon was 41 when she originated it, so I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility. I suspect her celebrity would be the bigger issue.
