I truly can't imagine a better film of Hello Dolly than the one we have. Even with Bette. But I'd welcome another - i just do not ever see a movie of this being given the kind of budget it would need, and since we already have what I consider a sensational film of the show, I'd rather another musical get film treatment/remake. But I know I'm in the musical-theater-fan-minority of those of us who think the movie is great.

I'd actually love to see CZJ do Desiree on film - i think she's a wonderful choice for it (besides that on the night I saw her she was pretty wonderful in the role), and I'm still surprised it didn't happen when she won a Tony for it and was an even bigger deal in movies than she is now.
And obviously we need a proper good film of ALNM, for gods sake. And yes Lansbury would be delicious to have in a film of it despite that I dare say at 95 years old *currently*, she is much older than the role seems to ask for and yes, too old for the role now. Even if Desiree were 50 (pushing the limit of her age given the age of her daughter, I think 46-53 is the real outside for her), which CZJ could pull off as she is a glamorous youthful 51 currently, how do you reconcile her mother being 45 years older than her? In a film with close-ups.

Applegate is a fun idea for Charlotte, I agree. Not sure if she'd win out for my dream casting in the role but she certainly holds weight at Netflix if that's where we are setting these movies up. ;)

Barbara as DOLLY with Walter Mattha....terrible casting and that actress who played Irene Malloy....she never worked again.....Gene Kelley overdirected it ...a bloating musical......One of the greatest shames that Carol Channing wasn't Dolly....one of my favorite performances of all time and 14 curtain calls !!!

well we obviously disagree... on everything except the shame that Channing's Dolly was put to film. But that doesn't mean I don't love Barbra's performance, or Matthau, or the woman who played Irene (if you're implying she never worked again because she was sooo bad no one would go near her, I think that's an insane conclusion to draw), and I don't know what of the film you think is overdirected as an adaptation of the show or why but I don't see a cinema adaptation being done much differently by anyone else. Hello Dolly is not a small intimate musical on stage - it's a fun story with a beautiful lead character, told with a classic show tune score. I think other than a couple scene i would change or adjust, a wonderful job was done on every level.

Honestly how anyone could complain about the Hello Dolly movie when crimes like Mame and A Chorus Line have been perpetrated, i'll never understand.

I agree with you on loving the DOLLY film, despite its flaws, and I too thought that Zeta-Jones was terrific as Desiree.

I was a huge fan of Zeta-Jones' performance in the CHICAGO film and really thought the film felt the loss of so much of her material. I was hoping that she and Rob Marshall would reunite to do a KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN film as a follow up...the biggest issue being that Marshall borrowed SPIDERWOMAN's gimmick of the musical numbers being seen in the head of one of the characters for CHICAGO. But, I think she would have been divine casting, except for her not being Latina, if we believe that A) Aurora is a Latina character, something that is never stated, or B) that even if the character IS Latina, that it can only be played by an actual Latina actress. I know people have differing views about what actors can or should be allowed to play.

She might still be able to pull off Desiree in a new film, but seems to have (semi?) retired these days while dealing with her mental health issues. I wonder if that would be an obstacle. Lansbury could probably pull off 20 years younger than her actual age, which would still work.

Applegate isn't the out-of-box choice that I first thought, considering that she headlined that SWEET CHARITY revival awhile back, and I think the tartness that she often brings to roles nowadays would definitely work for Charlotte, if she could be talked into a smaller featured role.

That concept would have been MUCH MUCH better applied to Kiss of the Spider Woman than Nine, where he nonetheless applied it. Though I would say i think if ALL the songs were seen that way than it would overkill and kill the effect of the numbers that are specifically the movie musical scenes with Aurora. But maybe it would have found a balance.

Of course it's now impossible for her to do a KOTS movie, it would have to be a Latinx female star. I'd love to see a movie of it made. Prefer if Mendes directs the movie with Marshall reprising his role as co-choreographer from the Broadway mounting. I do not at all trust him as a film director. But this seems like an amazing project for Mendes and for them to re-team from their Cabaret broadway days.

Kiss of the Spider Woman and Cabaret

Re. KOTSW: I don't have a clear idea of how strong a singer Jennifer Lopez is, but she strikes me as someone with the glamour, dance ability, and celebrity to make a convincing Aurora.

Re. Cabaret: I've said this since the 90s, but I'd love to see a Mendes/Marshall remake of Cabaret that closely follows their revival--and thus closely follows the stage version more than the Fosse film. To preserve Cumming's performance, I'd love this remake made sooner rather than later. Emma Stone would be a smashing Sally. Depending on how starry they'd need the supporting players to be and how old they imagine Schneider and Schultz to be, I could see compelling Schneiders in a wide array of wonderful women from Kathy Bates to Betty Buckley.

I'm still mystified why Spielberg chose to remake WSS when he literally could have gotten ANY MUSICAL filmed. ALNM, Company, Follies, a new Mame, Sunset Blvd., even The Rink and/or The Act (OK, indulge me on these last two), feel free to add.

Any thoughts on this?

...probably Beyonce. When Vanessa Williams took over the role on Broadway, I remember several critics comparing her to Josephine Baker. If a creative team leaned into that angle, Beyonce would be ideal. Although I'm not a huge fan of hers, I think she could be great in the role, particularly as it would call upon her to sing and dance, but not deliver much dialogue, which has been the problem in all of her film performances. She and Madonna seem to share a tendency to become dead-eyed and totally unnatural when called upon to speak on screen, suddenly losing all of their flair and considerable charisma as performers. With Aurora/the Spider Woman, Beyonce could almost totally avoid that.

Emmy winner and rapper/singer Jharrel Jerome could be a very exciting Valentin.

Thinking about it, I believe the only dialogue the character speaks is the lead in to I Do Miracles. I am not including the narration in Russian Movie because it isn't really scene work that requires acting....other than perhaps to act a little badly or cheesily :-)

Does the characater have any other spoken dialogue in the show?

Yeah I thought about that, but it seems to be set on music, so I didn't mention it. However, you make me remember that while it's sung and not spoken, A Visit is one of the few moments where she speaks as herself (insomuch as a character that is an allegory for death can be a "person"). Point is, it requires some acting in a way that the other numbers do not, since we were talking about what might be required of certain performers who are not known for their acting.

Another example of this, although also sung and not spoken, is the snippets of the song "Come" that are sprinkled throughout the show. Although with the exception of the opening lines of the piece, most of this is not preserved on either cast recording. Definitely seems like the sort of thing that woul be cut for a movie version! lol.

I knew your answer before I clicked reply.

I think she's be pretty good, with the right director.

But realistically, I don't think this will ever be greenlit.

There's a film of the 1993 London Sam Mendes production of Cabaret from the 90s with Jane Harrocks and Alan Cumming.

It will never happen.

If there was any possibility of this occurring, the time has long since passed.

Wisely.
