Re. KOTSW: I don't have a clear idea of how strong a singer Jennifer Lopez is, but she strikes me as someone with the glamour, dance ability, and celebrity to make a convincing Aurora. Re. Cabaret: I've said this since the 90s, but I'd love to see a Mendes/Marshall remake of Cabaret that closely follows their revival--and thus closely follows the stage version more than the Fosse film. To preserve Cumming's performance, I'd love this remake made sooner rather than later. Emma Stone would be a smashing Sally. Depending on how starry they'd need the supporting players to be and how old they imagine Schneider and Schultz to be, I could see compelling Schneiders in a wide array of wonderful women from Kathy Bates to Betty Buckley.

I'm still mystified why Spielberg chose to remake WSS when he literally could have gotten ANY MUSICAL filmed. ALNM, Company, Follies, a new Mame, Sunset Blvd., even The Rink and/or The Act (OK, indulge me on these last two), feel free to add. Any thoughts on this?

...probably Beyonce. When Vanessa Williams took over the role on Broadway, I remember several critics comparing her to Josephine Baker. If a creative team leaned into that angle, Beyonce would be ideal. Although I'm not a huge fan of hers, I think she could be great in the role, particularly as it would call upon her to sing and dance, but not deliver much dialogue, which has been the problem in all of her film performances. She and Madonna seem to share a tendency to become dead-eyed and totally unnatural when called upon to speak on screen, suddenly losing all of their flair and considerable charisma as performers. With Aurora/the Spider Woman, Beyonce could almost totally avoid that. Emmy winner and rapper/singer Jharrel Jerome could be a very exciting Valentin.

Thinking about it, I believe the only dialogue the character speaks is the lead in to I Do Miracles. I am not including the narration in Russian Movie because it isn't really scene work that requires acting....other than perhaps to act a little badly or cheesily :-) Does the characater have any other spoken dialogue in the show?

Yeah I thought about that, but it seems to be set on music, so I didn't mention it. However, you make me remember that while it's sung and not spoken, A Visit is one of the few moments where she speaks as herself (insomuch as a character that is an allegory for death can be a "person"). Point is, it requires some acting in a way that the other numbers do not, since we were talking about what might be required of certain performers who are not known for their acting. Another example of this, although also sung and not spoken, is the snippets of the song "Come" that are sprinkled throughout the show. Although with the exception of the opening lines of the piece, most of this is not preserved on either cast recording. Definitely seems like the sort of thing that woul be cut for a movie version! lol.

I knew your answer before I clicked reply. I think she's be pretty good, with the right director. But realistically, I don't think this will ever be greenlit.

| There's a film of the 1993 London Sam Mendes production of Cabaret from the 90s with Jane Harrocks and Alan Cumming. | |

It will never happen. If there was any possibility of this occurring, the time has long since passed. Wisely.
