| I can't call those films "botched." And "Kismet" does have the fabulous Dolores Gray. | |

| The movie of Kiss Me, Kate has one sequence that is absolutely sublime--the dance for six to "From This Moment On"--but the rest is a mess. Cutting "Another Opening, Another Show," re-assigning "Too Darn Hot," taking the most dramatic song in the score ("So In Love") right out of its dramatic context and turning it into a who-cares audition song--yeesh. And I'm sorry, I just plain don't like Kathryn Grayson. With all that, I don't actually dislike the movie of Kiss Me, Kate. But it could be so much better. The movie of Sweeney Todd is fine if all you want is a Johnny Depp movie. It isn't the musical. The musical is a grand Big Sing, for grand big voices. I agree with you about Dolores Gray, but there could easily exist a better film version of Kismet than the one we have now. |

| We don't get the robust singing in the film version of SWEENEY TODD, but we damn hell get the essence and musicality and the horror, which is enough for me. The Sondheim score fills in the blanks of the adequate vocals in this tilm, and, supporting players Ed Sanders and others more than satisfy me. This MOVIE would never have gotten made without Depp and Tim Burton, and I am a fan for life that they got it done. I'm a big horror fan, and a big musical fan, and for me this worked 100 percent. From what I've read, Mr. Sondheim is on board with this opinion. |
