Barbara as DOLLY with Walter Mattha....terrible casting and that actress who played Irene Malloy....she never worked again.....Gene Kelley overdirected it ...a bloating musical......One of the greatest shames that Carol Channing wasn't Dolly....one of my favorite performances of all time and 14 curtain calls !!!

well we obviously disagree... on everything except the shame that Channing's Dolly was put to film. But that doesn't mean I don't love Barbra's performance, or Matthau, or the woman who played Irene (if you're implying she never worked again because she was sooo bad no one would go near her, I think that's an insane conclusion to draw), and I don't know what of the film you think is overdirected as an adaptation of the show or why but I don't see a cinema adaptation being done much differently by anyone else. Hello Dolly is not a small intimate musical on stage - it's a fun story with a beautiful lead character, told with a classic show tune score. I think other than a couple scene i would change or adjust, a wonderful job was done on every level.

Honestly how anyone could complain about the Hello Dolly movie when crimes like Mame and A Chorus Line have been perpetrated, i'll never understand.
