Elvira is summoned again with CGI. The trailer makes it look like Coward's play has been goosed up in an effort to convince viewers it is a comedy.

Margaret Rutherford remains the best reason to see the 1945 film. She gives a very funny but oddly convincing portrait of a British spiritualist in the waning days of the empire. Her Madame Arcati is doty but a professional. She brushes off the ridicule of unbelievers, rolls up her sleeves and gets down to work.

Rutherford is marvelous. I also find Harrison quite good. I normally don't care for him much, but I think his youth makes him more charming here.

They appear to be trying very, very, very hard, which is not what one wants with Blithe Spirit. It screams "comedy." One imagines the unquiet spirit of Coward doing 360-degree revolutions in his grave.

Reminds me that 50 or so years ago, “High Spirits” (the musical based on Blythe Spirit) was playing on Broadway. There was an Actor’s Fund benefit performance. Richard Burton was playing “Hamlet” on Broadway. He and Elizabeth Taylor attended. It was a thrilling night. Coincidentally, I got a letter today asking me to make a donation to The Actor’s Fund today. I shall do so, partly because I am still grateful for that evening.
