godawful. I am sure this will excite 10 year olds with dreams of show business, but for any discriminating fan of a broadway or movie musical, this is atrocious. Murphy relies on quick edits to (fingers crossed) keep the viewer from noticing that Kidman can't dance, can't act and can't sell this derivative, horrible song. More like The Bomb.

And it's an important part of the plot. Kidman is one of the Top 20 actresses working today. The song is supposed to be derivative and it is not horrible.

Perhaps it works better in the stage show? To me, in this filmed version, it doesn't really land - it's just kinda flat.

It was a great number in the show, which had a lot to do with Angie Schworer's performance. I knew we were in trouble in this film version the moment that Kidman didn't land the "How old do you think I am?" joke - a line that killed in the theater - and what I saw of the number (I had to stop watching early on) just confirmed that this wasn't the right marriage of actor, material, and director. It's a shame, because this was a delight on stage.

I watched it again, call me a sadist.

It's just OK and I kinda expected more.

I'm not gonna call it awful, it has a lot of positivity.

Bur ultimately meh.

Depends on how much difference there is between "meh" and "awful." For me, not much.

We're all wanting to say goodbye to a lot of things in 2020. Can we add weak tea meta-musicals to the list, please? Not much honest or viable "zazz" in this number, and I assume that extends to the film in general. (I got a similar feeling from the Tony performance - which I felt was trying way too hard to be a mediocre copy of a copy of a copy of Hairspray or something like it, and just seemed forced instead of enjoyable.)

It also might be really nice to say goodbye to musicals centered on high school students (as played by adults) for a little while. ;-)

Morgenstern needs his head examined. The number is hateful and Kidman is embarrassingly bad in a non-part.

Yeah, it's not great, but I think you the hit nail on the head in your first sentence. I'm guessing the film is aiming to be very family-friendly holiday fare. Within that context, the number feels warm and sweet. The film looks tween-Disney to me. It will hit the Netflix daily top 10 quickly.

As a side note, I've never cared for Kidman in any film. Even in The Hours, which I think is a wonderful film, I find her to be the weak link.

Did you seen her in Dogville? She was incredible. I think she is a sensational actress.

No, I didn't see that one. I may have a bias against her. She just has never resonated with me.

On the other hand, I love Julianne Moore and Laura Linney. I guess it may just be a preference.

I made myself watch this again to make sure I wanted to reply to your post, which I admit made me laugh.

I think your assessment is a bit too harsh, however.....

I like Kidman. A LOT. I think she is a great actress, and she has the resume to back that up. "The Hours", "The Others" especially.

THIS is her big number? Everything about it is unashamedly derivative, which I hope was their point (or "goal"?)

Underwhelmed is an understatement. Ms. Kidman (who delivers musical goods in "Moulin Rouge") deserved more from this picture. She must have done it out of love for its subject, which is admirable.

There were better numbers on GLEE.

‘The Prom’ was a mediocre show saved by some dedicated performers - especially Beth Leavel. Why Ryan Murphy decided to preserve it on film is a mystery to me.
