I saw it as a teenager, and was a bit disappointed. Loudon was a big deal and of course so was Bennett....and I had really like QUEEN OF THE STARDUST BALLROOM. I expected Bennett to do something more exciting with the dancing-- the dance numbers were beautiful and fun and generally great, but they weren't inventive or integrated into the show in any kind of surprising way. The one number that blew me away was the disco number, performed by older dancers and just thrilling. When I think back about it, I wonder if there might be an intriguing way to do this in a black box or nightclub...I think the proscenium really sort of "froze" it. Loudon was great, as was the entire cast of veteran performers, but it felt lesser, and smaller, than it should have. |
