|The idea was to make Sarah Brown older. This was a deliberate choice. A woman who had been through a lot and unexpectedly finds a last shot at love paying off. Around the same time the Broadway revival of Most Happy Fella made its female lead older and it made sense of the story in a new way.
On paper, it seems that aging the heroine would work even better for Guys and Dolls. Sky picks out an unlikely woman as a target. She is not naive or an easy mark, but her understandable defensiveness gets broken down so that she and Sky unexpectedly find love.
However, in practice the concept did not work. (Perhaps because it makes her character echo Adelaide too much?)
They tried to find a way to make Mignini work and she did her best, but an older Sarah did not work and having an older Sarah play play the role as if she were a younger Sarah was even worse.
So it was not so much the performance as the conception of the character that was the problem.
