That movie stunk to high heaven. I believe Javier Bardem had originally been cast as Guido, and when he withdrew he was replaced by Daniel Day Lewis. In any case, why Banderas wasn't cast when he is an international film star who had starred in a successful Broadway revival of the show is anybody's guess. Perhaps Rob Marshall wanted to de-musicalize Guido all along? Bardem is not a singer, either. Whatever the reason, the film was dead on arrival.
