I feel for these artists who are expected to be as alert and grounded mentally as when they were young. It’s why I was so appalled at the criticism of Pacino wearing an earpiece to be assisted during the Mamet play a few years ago. Being an actor requires extraordinary presence of mind and body. Let’s be compassionate (even though, in Halston’s telling, Ms Gray may have had the habit of a drink or two). So many great artists (Bea Lillie and Michael Gambon come to mind) have struggled trying to keep up with what they were capable of in their prime. Let’s do whatever needs to be done to honor, sustain, and protect our treasures from now on.
