Watching Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou romp through "A Little Priest" at the second preview performance of SWEENEY TODD. While I did know about the cannibalism aspects of the show in advance, thanks to friends involved with it, it was still a giddy shock to see Sondheim go so directly there in this number so brilliantly. Moreover, the audience reaction was palpable astonishment as people began to realize just what Mrs. Lovett was proposing in such a comic manner. Now everybody knows what is coming, but they didn't at the second preview, and the audience went from uncertainty to shock to glee just as Sondheim, Wheeler, and Prince intended. It was beyond thrilling.
