Mary Martin seemed to have a philosophy, throughout her career, that when it came time to record cast albums of her shows, she would sing in a non-theatrical, crooning style completely different from the way she sang the same material in live performance. Intellectually, I guess I can understand why she made this decision, but in my opinion, her cast albums suffer for that specific reason. Her voice sounds lovely on all of them, but she often sounds like she's not singing theater music, and her recorded performances tend to lack theatrical sparkle.
