Onstage, Jane Eyre seemed static and a bit dull, but I find the CD to be a very pleasurable listen. Conversely, Daddy Long Legs was charming in the theatre, but the disc is a little heavy with recitative for my taste. A couple of years before Gordon got around to Sense and Sensibility, another musical version, by Jeffrey Haddow and Neal Hampton, played Denver, with hopes of moving to New York. A review is attached. A friend of mine was involved with it, so I saw a couple of workshop performances. It was quite lovely, I thought, but it never went any further. I think at the time there was a question about whether it was too big for Off Broadway but too small for Broadway. |
