I saw Rags in Boston, first weekend. It was a mess, the book wandered all over the place without focus. Larry Kert was terrible and uninteresting as one third of the romantic triangle at the center of the show. SOME of the score was fantastic, but there is quite a bit that is pedestrian. Teresa Stratus was magnificent as she was when at her best at the Met but without a strong director she was lost and she had no instincts for Musical Theater. Then there was the second female, Judy Kuhn, who for my money blew the house apart with the title tune at the end of act one. I knew she would become a star and she did. Final talley, there were things to love but overall the show never came together to be anything. I have heard the recording of the London version and frankly it bores me. |
