The Tonys have long ago morphed into something more than honoring its nominees and winners; it's now more about selling tickets for productions that are currently playing (with some exceptions with awards for shows that have closed) and which will increase their runs and help to give cachet for hopefully profitable tours, royalties for school productions, movie sales, etc. in the future. If awards were given now and there was no theater to see them performed live in person, with the overload of streaming and other entertainment available nowadays, they'd be as overlooked and forgotten (or be last year's news) by the time productions started up again. With that in mind, it pays to wait to make the Tonys exciting, positive news by handing out awards around the time Broadway starts up again.
