|It's beyond fuzzy... it just truly does not make sense. Once the "play" starts breaking down, it is clear that these scenes Pippins plays in have been planned to lead him to an unfulfilled feeling that will motivate him to perform the big finale the Leading Player wants. This isn't just for the Catherine scene. The people playing all the roles are introduced to us at the beginning as ACTORS. Even Charlemagne's entrance specifically says it. The entire show the players are putting on for us and for/with Pippin IS A PLAY. WITH SCENES OF DIALOGUE and DANCES and SONGS. Outside of Cirque, this is not what circuses do, and that is not even what Cirque actually does at all -- it is nothing like what Cirque does. Circuses do skits, sure, with clowns... but this is a play/musical.
The more one thinks it through the less sense a circus makes... until, frankly, it doesn't make sense at all.
I'm glad the revival was a success, and again I enjoyed it mostly once I let go of the logic and premise holes with Paulus's concept, but I so far have not been convinced by someone who thinks it works that it does work. I'm happy to be the old man yelling at the kids to get off his lawn here... but really it doesn't work.
