That is the only explanation I've seen that makes sense of why it "worked" even though it did not make logical sense at all as a circus.
Pippin isn't the greatest play, or the best book, but I think enough of it as a musical to expect a directorial concept that makes sense with the actual musical being performed. As entertaining and even thrilling or magical as the revival could often be, I don't think it was as perfect a production or "new vision" of the musical Pippin as so many lauded it for being. However I'm clearly wrong or at least my issues with it are rendered invalid if in the revival the show still made it's larger points, themes, and created the magic and put the score over well... which almost everyone seems to agree it did.
Ah well.
