Two summers ago, I was in London and saw the new production of EVITA in Regent's Park. It was supposed to transfer to the West End, but COVID intervened.
American Samantha Pauly was a stunning Eva. Used to Lupone's version, I was unprepared for how effective a more warm, subtle approach to the role can be.
Reading about Lloyd Webber's concerns regarding Lupone's lack of warmth makes sense. While Lupone was able to create a definitive version for a generation, I wish NY could view this London version to compare.
The last Bway revival was awful and should be forgotten. |
