Basically Lebowitz advised Stigwood not to continue with the production because she thought Broadway audiences would reject a musical about a fascist
I vaguely remember criticism about the glamorization of a fascist when the musical came out, even with Che imbedded in the narrative as an ideological counterweight. But then Che doesn't get to sing a showstopping ballad on a balcony in a ball gown.
Balcony moments with leaders... even Patti LuPone joked about Trump's balcony moment saying she did it better as Evita. |
