It was 58 years ago, but June Havoc's MARATHON '33 with Julie Harris remains one of the most enthralling productions I've ever seen. It was a stunning recreation of the depths of the depression era with astonishing performances from Julie Harris, Conrad Janis, Peter Masterson, Doris Roberts, Gabe Dell, Lane Bradbury, Iggie Wolfington, Lee Allen, Will Hare, Marcella Dodge, Ralph Waite, and a cast of 44 plus The Tail Gate 5, including Conrad Janis on trombone. So why did it only last 48 performances? I don't know. I can't even find any contemporary reviews online. I was lucky enough to see it as a freshman at Columbia with a free ticket, and it has stayed with me as an example of what theater could be when talented people were working as one on a project that brought out their best.
