Jessie Mueller did not sing it in the misbegotten revisal. David Turner did. Very well, in fact.
I saw Liza sing it once live back in 1990 at MoMA, before health issues sidelined her, and though her performance was not up there with Barbara Harris's or Eydie Gorme's it served as a dynamic reminder of how good she could be given the right material. The version she did for Letterman is not very good at all. Paced much too slowly, probably to accommodate her wounded vocal instrument, it just plods.
I also saw Julie Andrews sing it at a tribute to Alan Jay Lerner around the same time, maybe a year earlier. Did she ever record it? I don't know, but she seemed surprisingly at home belting it out. |
