First of all, sure, I'm all for a bit of juicy gossip. I don't think a person's sexual identity is gossip. It is part of what drives them. Informs their decisions. It's an essential element in their lives. It is the job of the biographer to put the meat on the bones. To supply the insights by interviews and reporting. Growing up, I had no openly gay models to look to. How delighted I was to find that some of my favorite writers and creators were actually gay. Lorenz Hart, Cole Porter, John Gielgud, Eva La Galienne, Their lives were profoundly shaped by their homosexuality. It is obviously too soon for all those who knew and worked with Nichols to assess him honestly. Perhaps they are "protecting" Diane Sawyer. I'm looking for a fuller picture. Mark Harris is capable of writing about this with depth and understanding. He is married to the premiere writer of our time.
