| We are not going to agree, and we are probably going around in circles, but I'll take one more stab. Whether a person's sexual identity is more than gossip depends on a nexus. Do you seriously think that every gay person is driven by their sexuality? Do you seriously think it informs every gay person's decisions? That strikes me as the kind of stereotyping that we've fought hard to dissuade others from entertaining. I think Harris does what you ask of him; he didn't find what you apparently wanted him to find, and he didn't want to reduce his biography to tabloid fodder. (Others have, which is fine, but I do not think that's Harris's shtick. I don't question that the people you mention were "profoundly shaped by their homosexuality." But how do you know that Mike Nichols was? How do you even know that you have labelled him accurately (even accepting that he and Avedon had an "affair." How do you know these people on whom you pass judgment have not assessed him honestly, based on everything they know? If you recognize Harris's capabilities and person choice of a husband, why are you accusing him of covering up what he knows or was able to learn. Maybe just maybe he just didn't find what you want the truth to be, and maybe just maybe he doesn't share you belief that gay people cannot be described in a way that does not depend on the stereotype you are trying to sell me. If I accepted all of your premises, I would reach the same point as you, but I think you are overstepping here. Just my 2 cents. Happy for you to disagree. |
