I can't say what's in the book, but while it is definitely an error to say that it was on Broadway, I'd say that it's not entirely wrong to describe it as a flop, at least critically. Reviews were very mixed. Frank Rich was certainly mixed in the Times, and I think the Rich review gives a general impression of being more negative than he perhaps intended. I wouldn't be greatly surprised if Garner read that review, and only that one, and decided it was a flop. The Times is often Times-centric in annoying ways, perhaps especially when it comes to the performing arts. In any case, Rich was not alone. Some other reviews were actually more negative, nearly pans, while some others were favorable to raves. I wouldn't describe it as a critical flop, but at the time there was an impression that the reviews were distinctly disappointing. If Garner is basing that on something in the book, I think it may be that Nichols regarded it as a critical flop, and the book may say something like that.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were empty seats at some performances, despite the fact that it was impossible to get tickets. This has happened at least a few times with hot-ticket shows at the Newhouse. So many tickets are set aside for house seats, and then when the house seats are not used, there can sometimes be plenty of empty seats even as people who wanted tickets were told earlier that the run was sold out. I've learned that if something is supposedly sold out and supposedly impossible to get tickets for at the Newhouse, get on the cancellation line. Not only may you get in, you may see a surprising number of empty seats.
