I caught Tyson's Tony-winning portrayal in ''The Trip to Bountiful'' on Broadway in 2013. But I'll always remember her most for her Emmy-winning tour de force in the 1974 TV movie ''The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,'' based on Ernest J. Gaines' novel. She played a young African-American woman who was born into slavery and lives to witness the civil rights movement at the ripe old age of 110. The last 5 minutes of this film feature Tyson's slow and proud walk up to a whites-only water fountain. Underscored only by Fred Karlin's plaintive tune, there's not a word spoken throughout this sequence, but as performed by Tyson and directed by John Korty, it's still such a powerful and poignant moment in TV history.
