I think that Ms. Page and Ms. Tyson were each playing the character as written--a profoundly Christian lady making her own destiny for a couple of days. The difference was that they were playing two different versions of Christianity. They both tap into the young girl who has found herself an old lady. And they both nail the sweet dignity of the closing scenes.
FWIW--the film version of Ms. Tyson's production is lovely. |
