I was in NYC a few years ago and decided to get a ticket to A TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL with Cicely Tyson. She was truthful, funny, specific—but I was worried at how frail she seemed. When she bounded at curtain call, I realized she had been ACTING. A worthy Tony award winner.
When she started to sing a long forgotten church hymn, the mostly African American joined in with her. It may have happened more than once, but it was beautiful.
