I thought "Civil War" was fine for what it was, a concert around a theme, and in many ways was more successful than "Parade", which was a series of brilliant parts that could never figure out how to fit together. I went into it with super low expectations, which I'm sure helped, but I'd say it's easily the best thing Wildhorn has written.
Which is a low bar.
That was a rough year for musicals, but I do wish "It Ain't Nothing but the Blues" had won. It was a delightful surprise that had Purpose, which is rare on Broadway. |
