| I LOVE ''The Civil War'' and saw it many times on Broadway. It had no traditional plot. It was more like a song cycle about the Union and Confederate soldiers, their loved ones and the slaves who fought to be freed. A number of the songs were based on letters, diaries and firsthand accounts from the era, like ''Sarah.'' It was inspired by an eloquent letter that a Union soldier, Sullivan Ballou, wrote to his wife, Sarah, the week before he was killed at the First Battle of Bull Run. Jack Murphy and Frank Wildhorn took Ballou's sentiments and wove it into one of the most moving ballads. Murphy and Wildhorn captured the hopes and heartaches of common people caught up in history. Wildhorn has such a wonderful gift for melody, and I adore so many of its stirring and soaring songs, like ''I'll Never Pass This Way Again,'' ''Virginia,'' ''Last Waltz for Dixie'' and ''The Glory.'' And Broadway's ''Civil War'' boasted one of the most glorious casts I've ever heard: Michel Bell, Matt Bogart, Gilles Chiasson, Dave Clemmons, Cheryl Freeman, Capathia Jenkins, Michael Lanning, Beth Leavel, Gene Miller and more. The choral numbers sounded like they were out of this world. Since it closed in NYC, this astonishing show has played the Ford's Theatre in D.C. and at Gettysburg, Pa., and I'll always be a ''Civil War'' buff! |
