When it first started off-Broadway (I saw it early in previews), it was advertised as a dance play. I liked it a lot - it was an interesting piece.
If I remember it correctly, Brantley gave it a rave review as a musical. Immediately, the other critics started called it a musical and that was it. The show was now considered a musical.
I didn’t mind the acclaim - as I said, I liked the show, just not quite as much as the critics.
All that being said, i personally did not think it should have been eligible as best musical.
