| The two that jump out at me that I disagree with most are Ain' Misbehaving and Kismet. AM is the ONLY jukebox musical that I like and even if the story is not a major element, it is possible to see a narrative runing through it. Even if one disregards the narrative, bringing to life all those wonderful songs associated with Fats Waller who was mostly a footnote in history until his star was repolished by the show. Kismet admittedly has a fairly high cheese content, but is a load of fun if performed well. Part of the problem with its reputation is the movie, Keel just didn't have the insocience which is totally required to be good in the role of Hajj. Its as FAIRY TALE not meant to be taken too seriously, but with the right leading man (and the show lives or dies because of who is cast in the role--Marc Kudish??) can still please audiences. As far as Raisin is concerned another poster got it right, it is rarely produced because A Raisin in the Sun is easier to mount. Someday, perhaps before I die some VERY enterprising company will mount both side by side. Our (West Coast of Florida)wonderful West Coast Black Theatre Troupe has done both, but not together. Then people will be able to study how the musical changes the emotional arc in ways that only a musical can accomplish as opposed to the brilliant original. As for me, I'm super delighted to have both works available. |
