I've seen two productions of "Kismet", and it really requires the right cast to pull it off. The music is gorgeous, though. I saw a production at City Opera with George Hearn, who was game but tame, basically, which wasn't able to pull it off nor did the one at Encores with Brian Stokes Mitchell, who was a bit too Olympia Dukakis-bound to his script (perhaps not enough rehearsal?), and had not legit enough singers to capably sing the score playing the Caliph and Marsinah. (They should have cast Elena Shaddow and James Snyder, who were terrific in similarly challenging legit roles in "Fanny").
