"City of Angels" has a really fun score, and the original cast was very good indeed. I rather think it falls apart in the second act, especially at the end; I thought the song "Funny" (a well-crafted, but very unfunny song) stuck out like a sore thumb and didn't belong in this mostly light-hearted show. I remember the company was throwing papers around on stage at the finale and rebelling against the "Buddy" character, and there was someone in an iron lung, just kind of becoming more and more unbelievable. Plus the show was so complicated a staging, that when I saw the second cast it was really off; it needed to be performed with the meticulousness of a finely tuned watch, and it wasn't by that time. James Naughton's standard performance which he gives in practically every show worked very well, Randy Graff was great, Gregg Edelman sang very well, and lots of other talented folks in the cast, but it had 2nd act trouble and just too complicated a show, like the song in the show said "It Needs Work". But it was enjoyable for the most part with the original cast.
