| There's wonderful stuff in anything that makes it as far as a nomination for Best Musical let alone a win. This is out of shows that won Best Musical, so on the whole we aren't picking from a list that included that many musicals that would rate below a B grade. But I'll say for myself I would have walked out of Kinky if it weren't the best musical winner and if my friend hadn't been in it. And I saw the original cast. Just some of the laziest writing I've ever seen in an acclaimed hit musical, book and score (and the whole production - directing, choreo, costumes too -- those elements didn't do much to overcompensate as I might have expected). And that's not to say the score doesn't have some good stuff or at least very enjoyable tunes but... shockingly mediocre, the same way Alan described Applause, which I agree with. So no matter how you cut it, if we are talking contenders for the worst of the musicals that won best musical, Kinky Boots has a firm spot on that list if you ask me. I also don't think Best Musical has been won by a bad musical that many times. Often it's won by an A grade musical, sometimes by a B grade musical, but rarely a C or D. I would put Memphis, Kinky Boots and Applause in the C or D category for sure. |
