| I assume most agreed with this at the time, but who knows, but I definitely felt happy that Gentleman's Guide won because it was an entertaining and competent ORIGINAL BOOK MUSICAL. But in any year with real competition I do not think it deserves to win or have a place in the halls of "the best musicals" as it were -- a good story, traditional style score and a mere 1 standout song does not a "best musical" make in a good season. I think a lot of people were shocked it beat Beautiful, and I think its win was somewhat popularly regarded as vote for original score musicals over jukebox musicals or Disney movies slapped on stage (the other nominees were Beautiful -- which I think most people were resigned to assume would win as it had an incredible catalogue of songs, a star performance and was not a terrible show, Aladdin -- which was definitely not in the BATB or Lion King category of award worthy Disney on stage, and After Midnight -- which I hear was sensational but of course never had a shot at winning). I think that had something to do with Memphis winning in its year, when all the other nominees were jukebox (including Fela! which was a more artistic and powerful kind of jukebox, but nonetheless didn't have any original score). Oh to have seen Redhead in that original Fosse staging with Gwen! But the musical has to stand on its own after that production, so while it is a charming little piece I do find it, overall, one of the very weakest as a musical of the musicals that won Best Musical. |
