| I assume you are speaking about the 1985 film and not the A CHORUS LINE project that Ryan Murphy is putting together. I recently came across a copy of the book 'Richard Atteborough's Chorus Line" which came out when the film was released. It's a surprisingly candid two part look at all the cast members in the film - first the experience of the performer and second Richard Attenborough's notes about how the performer came to be cast. Both Reed and Attenborough in their individual interviews make it clear that there were many who didn't want Reed in the part. Reed says Attenborough fought strongly for her to the point of giving the ultimatum: 'either she is cast or I walk.' The interviews, of course, don't indicate who else might have been considered, but Attenborough emphasizes that he saw the role as 'late 20s' infers to me that Reed might have been cast over more seasoned veterans. I imagine Donna McKechnie and Ann Reinking were both considered and vetoed by Attenborough. | |
