I would have expected someone to mention "The Will Rogers Follies," particularly in light of the fact that it won over "The Secret Garden," "Once on This Island," and "Miss Saigon."
I wouldn't classify "Will Rogers" as among the worst of the winners, as its bouncy score, great leading man and typically inventive Tommy Tune staging made it a reasonably satisfying, splashy evening of Americana.
But "Once on This Island" and "Miss Saigon" have already had Broadway revivals, and "The Secret Garden" has been mentioned for one. It's hard to imagine a Broadway revival of "The Will Rogers Follies" without Tune's original '91 production, which can still be seen in a taping done for Japanese TV. |
